Hi everyone, When running a boat at high speeds >3000 RPM and going to idle RPM (in gear) i hear some strange (knocking) noise. The first possibility is that the impellor housing had corroded or cracked. Lower Unit Noise? If I power off the engine and then on sound at idle is completely clean no matter in netutral or not. Any insight as to what is making this noise and how to stop it or just live with it. The Trim unit works OK when boat out of water and stationary in water (leg travels full length of clean piston rams) but when underway, the pump/motor makes a hammering noise when lowering leg – this noise does not occur when lifting the leg. I'm at the mercy of what the mechanic found and boat is three hours away. An outboard motor noise often comes from the housing of the engine. Any ideas? When putting in neutral sound disappears also. By any chance did you see any oil on the foot of the lower unit? I helped my brother change the water pump and stat in his new to him C60 used Yamaha. Mine was doing it a little more than expected so I lowered the idle speed and it fixed it. Not overly loud. One idea is to find a blown power head and use the lower unit from another motor. I just rode on my buddies boat and its silent (but also brand new). But sort of a noticeable squeaking.
